20 Suspects Arrested In China Against Cryptojacking Case That Affected Over 1 Million Computers

Over one million computers got affected by a major cryptojacking case that took place in China creating an illicit profit worth 15 million yuan which is about $2.2 million of US dollar. As per the news source on 9 July, China has arrested 20 suspects regarding the same.

Cryptojacking is a term which is used in the world of crypto if a person uses the processing power of a computer in order to mine cryptocurrencies without the permission or knowledge of the owner.

As per the report by the local source Legal Daily, it has been stated that the investigation regarding the same begun in the month of January this year. This investigation took place after the Tencent’s security team noticed the Weifang City Public Security Bureau about the script of mining which was hidden in the plugin and was later available for free downloading. Tencent is a technical giant which has launched WeChat.

The style mining script popularly known as “Trojan Horse” was programmed in a way that it runs when a CPU of the computer utilizes power less than 50 percent.

The local media also reports that the developers after the script’s development were seen to the city of Qingzhou. Also, the Public Security Bureau of Qingzhou assigned a dedicated team to handle the same investigation.

The individual which was involved in this case when arrested in March revealed in the trial on the basis of which the implication of a company named Dalian Shengping Network Technology got uncovered by the task force which further leads to arrest of 16 more suspects. It is also revealed that the same company is doubtful for advertising the free downloads to 2.89 million computers in which 1 million computers were involved in cryptojacking.

Two suspects who have been working for some other company has been charged on April 18 for accumulating the malware in combination with the software of network management which is operated by the internet cafes located in Heilongjiang Province. On the same day, another suspect was arrested against the charge of the mining program’s task force seizure.

The sources revealed that eleven out of eighteen suspects now has been released on the bail. The scheme of cryptojacking which has come into action from last two years has resulted in 15 million Yuan i.e. $2.2 million profit from the illegal mining of crypto.

McAfee Labs which is a cybersecurity firm has revealed in its last month report that in the first quarter of 2018 a staggering 629% has been rose by many forms of cryptojacking. This number is certainly increased if compared to that of the previous quarter committing.

In addition to all this, as revealed by the team of cybersecurity in July, approx 40,000 devices belonging to a number of different industries had been affected by the miner named as Monero (XMR). It has been stated that this happened because of crypto mining campaign and hybrid malicious traffic manipulation.
